REPORT xlvii The death of Bishop Claughton left vacancy in the number of the Governors for Life which has been filled by the appointment by the Visitor of the Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol To the seat on the Council thus occasioned the Bishop of St Albans has been elected Sir Joseph Lister Bart has been elected Member in succession to Sir William Bowman Bart whose death the Council had to lament in their last Report Professor Goodeve having resigned his seat it was resolved to elect as his successor Mr Henry Harben to whose munificence the Fine Art Department of the College is indebted for the maintenance of the Harben Chair of Fine Art Respecting the general position of the College the Council are not yet able to add anything of consequence to the ob- servations at the conclusion of their last Report It was then explained that the Charter which had been passed by the Privy Council for the Incorporation of the College wTith University College and the Medical Schools and with the alliance of Gresham College into new University to be called the Gresham University having been opposed in Parliament chiefly by the Victoria University had been referred to another Royal Commission and that until the result of this further reference had been ascertained it would be impracticable to deal finally either with the organisation of the College or with its financial position Ever since that Report was made the Commission has been occupied in hearing evidence and they are meeting for the first time this week March 12 1893 to consider what recommenda- tions they will make On behalf of King's College evidence has been laid before them by the Bishop of London Sir Joseph Lister Dr Priestley Professors Adams Robinson Thomson Capper Halliburton and Gault and by the Prin- cipal and very important evidence has also been given on behalf of University College by Sir George Young and others in support of the grant of Charter substantially the same as that of the Gresham Charter but with some modifications The University of London on the other hand has been
