REPORT Xli careful comparison between the work of the Queen's τ Scholars at their admission and towards the close of their course shows that they greatly profit by their training The Professors generally commend them as earnest students and some have distinguished themselves in this respect At each of his annual visits Inspector has expressed satisfaction with the work of the Department -The Department of Science has an increasing number of non-matriculated students but except for the purpose of special studies is also under disadvantage during the pre- sent transitional character of University arrangements in London -The Engineering Department is in most satisfac- tory condition It is believed to be at present the largest School of Engineering Students in the kingdom This is due it is hoped to the improvements which have been introduced into its equipment during the last few years especially by the munificence of Lady Siemens and to the pains which have been taken to keep its teaching abreast of modern science As striking evidence of the good work it has done hitherto it may be mentioned that this year the Presidents of the three Engineering Institutions are former students of this Department-namely Mr Harrison Hayter President of the Institution of Civil Engineers Dr Wm Anderson President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Mr Preece President of the Institute of Electrical Engineers -The Medical Department -The matriculated stu- dents in attendance were 175 and the non matricu ated were 30 five years' curriculum is now compulsory on every student who registered after January 1892 and this will probably lessen the number of medical students as it will mean year's additional cost of living which will fall very hardly on country students The fees have been very
