CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES 581 Students of Division of this Department who re- quire additional or individual instruction or who desire instruction duringthe vacations of their classes -NAVY EXAMINATIONS The general arrangements applying to this Section are ven at page 578 In this section are received Candidates for Naval Engineer and Naval Con- struction Studentships Subjects of Examination- Arithmetic including Tots marks 300 Λλ" ting 40 Spelling 60 English Composition 100 Grammar 150 French 150 Geography 200 Algebra 300 Euclid first six books 300 Latin 150 Freehand Drawing 100 Very Elementary Physics and Chemistry 100 Candidates to be successful must qualify in the first four subjects and obtain total of at least 700 marks Limits of age 14 and 17 Examinations are held every April The examination is an open competitive one The parents of each Engineer Student are required to pay £40 per annum for each year of training In certain cases these payments are reduced and in all cases about £50 is returned to the Students in the shape of weekly pay The full pay of the Engineering Branch of the Navy varies from that of Assistant Engineers at £137 year to that of Inspectors of Mnchinery with £500 rising to £700Aa year Candidates for Assistant Clerkships in the Navy Subjects of Examination Obligatory Dictation marks 60 Writing 40 Writing Letter on given subject 75 Writing the substance of chapter read out 75 French 150 Addition 50 Arithmetic 250 Geography and History 150 Scripture 100 Optional-Elementary Mathematics
