556 civil service classes the Preliminary Examination for Second Division Clerkships and besides the chances of other candidates in the Open Examinations they compete among themselves for certain number of these appointments It must be remembered however that Boy Clerkships and Boy Copyistships cease at 20 After passing the Boy Clerks Examination no time should be lost in commencing preparation for Second Division Clerkships or the Excise Male Telegraph Learner ships- Age 14-18 pay 12s week rising to £190 year with chances of further promo- tion These are recommended to those who do not feel justified in aiming at Second Division Clerkship or the Excise and to those who whilst hoping ultimately to gain one of these Appointments desire to secure at once place on the permanent Establishment In this latter respect these Appointments present considerable advantage as compared with the Boy Appointments of the preceding paragraph But they do not afford equal facilities for study the hours being longer and not always the same Telegraphists obtain the same extension of age as Boy Clerks and Copyists see preceding paragraph Second Division Clerkships New name for Men Clerkships If employment is not desired until 17 candidates for the Civil Service should aim at Second Division Clerkships age 17-20 salary £70 to £350 with chance of further promotion The competition is very severe and intending candidates should therefore begin their preparation early at 16 if not preparing for Boy Clerkship Nearly nine-tenths of these appointments are in London Second Division Clerkships are often sought as affording fairly remunerative employment in London whilst preparing for higher appointments in the Civil Service or elsewhere the hours being 10-5 Excise Appointments -Excise Appointments age 19-22 salary £80 to £250 with very fair prospect of rising to £400 and many still higher salaries are scattered over the United Kingdom and present greater variety of duties
