engineering 181 Steam engine trials are at present made on the 20 compound Davey Paxman engine in the Electrical Laboratory Testing machine 50 000 lbs for tension compression shear and bending Testing machine for wire and beams 000 lbs Cement-testing machine Torsion machine 000 inch lbs Mercury column specially arranged for testing springs gauges &c under steam up to 250 lbs per square inch Hydraulic tanks for measuring the flow of water through orifices &c Friction apparatus for finding the friction in journals efil- ciency of lubricants &c Engineering Workshops The Workshop course for first-year students is so arranged as to give preliminary knowledge of the use of tools methods of adjustment limits of accuracy obtainable in practice &c such as will fit them for the investigations in which they will be engaged in the Engineering Laboratory during the second and third years The first-year students will separate into two divisions in the workshops Division will during the first two terms be instructed in the Carpenter's shop Division Î’ will spend the first two terms at the Vice-bench and in the Machine shop At the beginning of the third term the divisions will exchange The courses will be- Carpenter Shop First Term -Planing-use of chisel &c -joints-mortice scarf-dovetail &c Second Term -Construction of simple models of valves and valve-gears &c such as will be afterwards practically avail- ible for working out problems in slide-setting &c
