ORIENTAL SECTION 161 XVII &φοΙ or MtiHttn oriental £hrtite0 ESTABLISHED BY THE IMPERIAL INSTITUTE OF HE UNITED KINGDOM THE COLONIES AND INDIA IN UNION WITH UNIVERSITY COLLEGE AND KING'S COLLEGE LONDON The commercial and official Classes in the United Kingdom h08e pursuits entail either temporary residence in or visits כ Oriental countries and communion or correspondence ith the natives of those countries have long experienced he want of facilities which might be afforded by sufficiently omprehensive public Institution where practical and olloquial acquaintance with the more important modern riental languages might be acquired In France Germany and Austria-Hungary there exist nstitutions of magnitude and importance for affording nstruction in the spoken and written Oriental dialects and in natters relating to the history commerce and political conomy of the countries in which those languages are spoken In France the School of Living Oriental Languages which vas founded nearly 100 years ago receives from the State he free use of large building and grant of over £6 000 per annum gratuitous instruction is there given in he chief modern Oriental languages and commercial section las recently been added to it by the Minister of Public nstruction The Imperial Oriental Academy of Vienna has long been world-wide celebrity and has greatly contributed to the extension of commerce in Austria-Hungary whilst in Berlin he Imperial German School of Living Oriental Languages established year ago upon very important footing has xlready received considerable development This School is supported by an annual subvention of £3 600 and the tuition &here is entirely gratuitous
