Ιιϋ EXTENSION FUND The Council of King's College London appeal to the friends of the Institution and to all who are interested in the promotion of the highest education in London for the contribution of sum of not less than £50 000 to enable the College to meet the increasing demands of education particu- larly in modern science and experimental research For nearly sixty years the College has maintained its position as one of the two University Colleges of London by successive additions to its original foundation until total sum of more than £200 000 raised by voluntary subscription has been expended upon the construction and equipment of the buildings required for its educational work But in the absence of any general endowment the Council experience the greatest difficulty in satisfying the fresh demands continually made upon them by the development of education Even the older Universities with their splendid endowments find it necessary to solicit additional resources in order to meet the same demands and the need of an un endowed institution such as King's College is far more urgent If moreover the endowment of the College were more adequate to the support of its Staff and to the maintenance of its scientific appliances the Council would be in position to reduce the fees of Students The Council appeal therefore for share in the liberality with which in other great cities similar claims on behalf of other British Colleges and Universities have of late been so frequently and so munificently recognized King's College is now recognized by the Government as one of the two University Colleges in London and receives towards the annual expenses of two of its ten Departments
