ueport xli training the masters of our National Schools and thus extend its influence and its connexion The Department of Science must await settlement of the University question for its practical development -The Engineering Department is in more prosperous condition than at any former time The construction of an admirable Electrical Laboratory by aid of the time'y muni- ficence of Lady Siemens under the management of one of the most eminent electrical engineers of the day Professor John Hopkinson offers advantages to Students of which they have been eager to avail themselves and the number of Stu- dents has increased from 75 to 105 The William Siemens Laboratory as it will be called in honour of its founder and of the distinguished name she wished to commemorate is now complete It furnishes considerable architectural improve- ment to the front of the College and the Council believe that it gives complete satisfaction from scientific point of view By the generosity of the Carpenters' Company several other important improvements have been introduced into the De partment The Company have constructed new entrance to the workshops from the ground floor of the College which is in many respects of great advantage to the Students and they have added an excellent room at the top of the building for classes in Wood-carving Professor Banister Fletcher also who was last year Master of the Company has mainly at his own cost established an excellent Architectural Museum Fresh technical classes in connection with these improvements have been established and it is hoped they will prove of increasing usefulness Mr Capper has been appointed Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the place of Professor Shelley who resigned last year and the workshops are being reorganized under his direction On the whole the Council feel confident that this Department is now in state of great efficiency and they have the best hopes of its future development
