DEPARTMENT FOR LADIES 385 The Professor will receive German resumes of his Lectures י and return them corrected It is proposed to deviate during the present Session from the usual plan of giving in chronological order critical account of the writers and their works and to treat each of the principal branches of German literature as whole from the iirst classical period down to our own times By adopting this course the students will be fully enabled to form general idea of the progress of German thought which feature it is hoped will also be of interest to those ladies who attended the lectures on German literature on former occasion The principal works treated in the lectures will be fully analysed and illustrated by the reading aloud of copious extracts calculated to show the chief charac- teristics of the respective writings The extracts will be read partly by the Professor himself and partly by those ladies who may wish to do so The latter will thus take an active part in the lectures and have besides useful practice in reading aloud The Professor icill be happy to read English metrical versions by the students of short pieces of German poetry and communicate to the translators his opinion on their performances Michaelmas Term Die Epische Poesie Das Volksepos Das Nibelungenlied und die Siegfriedsnge Das Gudrunlied Entstehung Form und Inhalt dieser beidcn Epen Reineke Fuchs In niederdeutscher Sprache Bear- beitet von Goethe י י β β י
