186 ENGINEERING off work is required to clean down his bunch and to leave his tools and the shop in neat and workmanlike order XIII Students are to keep to their own work and not to walk about the Shop so as to be in the way or to hinder other Students when at work XIV Students are not allowed to take away their work until the end of the Term Finished work should be given in Charge to the Professor or if taken away at Christinas or Easter must be brought back by June 16 with view to the Prize Competition Engineering Laboratory -Investigations are made into the experimental data upon which engineering calculations are based thorough training is given in the methods of experimenting and the precautions necessary in order to obtain accurate and reliable results Students are thus enabled to gauge the limits within which any data may be trusted and are familiarized with the means by which they may obtain data for themselves when as so frequently happens in practice they have to undertake problems in new and untried iields The directions in which such experiments are made are The best form for and the efficiency of cutting tools &c Efficiency of machines Economy and working of steam-engines gas-engines Ac Strength of materials-experiments in tension-conipres- sion-shear and torsion and beams on the twenty-five ton testing-machine presented by the Cloth workers' Company Friction &c Rigidity of structures &c In the third year students are encouraged to make original investigations for themselves Civil Engineering First Year Lecture Room from 15 to every Friday and Field Work at 10 every alternate Saturday during the Academical Year
