xlii REPORT from lack of funds and six beds in it have been assigned to Dr Hayes who has at the same time been appointed Teacher of Practical Obstetrics while Dr John Phillips has been appointed Assistant Physician for the Diseases of Women and Children Mr Underwood has been appointed Professor of Dental Surgery in place of Mr Ashley Gib- bings and Mr Edward Lowe Webb has become Vaccinator to the Hospital The Council regret the retirement from the Chair of Physiology of Professor Gerald Yeo who has ren- dered valuable service to the College and has conferred much honour upon it In his place they have been able to appoint Dr Halliburton who had been lately Assistant Professor of Physiology at University College Dr Sheppard has retired from the Chair of Psychological Medicine and in his place the Council have had the satis- faction of appointing Distinguished former student of the College-Dr White the Resident Medical Superintendent of the City of London Lunatic Asylum -The only change to be particularly noticed in the condition of the Evening Class Department is that the subjects of study and examination for the Associateship have been arranged and grouped afresh so as to adapt them better to the present state of learning and to the demands of modern life The Gilbart Lectures on banking have again been attended by the large number of 800 students -The Ladies' Department at Kensington continues to prosper The number of the students in successive terms varies from four to five hundred The most numerous attend- ance is at lectures like those kindly given by Mrs Fawcett or at the lectures on English literature of Professor Hales but as the calendar of the Department shows the studies of the students include most subjects of consequence The Art Students have so much increased that the Council have been obliged to build new Studio in the garden at the back of the house Its cost is about £200 towards which special donations amounting to £110 have been collected
