CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES Algebra 100 Latin 100 French 100 German 100 Drawing 100 Theoretical Mechanics 100 Chemistry 100 At least two but not more than four optional subjects to be taken For subjects not taken up in this Division Students should attend Division II Salaries £80-£5- £100 £100-£10-£150 £150-£12 10 -£200 C200 -£15-£245 £245-£15 and £20-£300 There is no superannuation Customs Outport Clerks -The term Outport Ιβ applied to all the Ports of the United Kingdom where there is Customs Establishment excepting London alone These appointments are in future to be filled partly by examinations limited to out-door Officers of Customs see page 509 and partly by open examinations The limits of age for the open examin- ations are 17 and 20 2nd Class Clerks rise from £70 by £5 annually for years then by £10 to £200 Many 2nd lass Clerks have special allowances in addition to the above service φ salary They are eligible for promotion without examination to- 1st Class Clerkships £220-£15-£400 and Outport Collectorships £200-£1 200 As open competitions will not be frequent and the clerkships tilled by them not numerous success may be delayed even hough it may be certain Candidates are therefore advised meantime to take the Second Division Examinations Second Division Clerks are eligible for Outport Clerkships and will probably secure very large proportion of these appointments -BOY CLERKSHIPS See page 498 for arrangements that are common to all Classes in Division Competitions for Boy Clerkships are generally held half- yearly-in January and July Candidates for Boy Clerkships who join for one evening week attend on Thursday The instruction given on this evening constitutes complete course of preparation for the
