report 39 -The Science Department has scarcely been able to do more than commence its work but it has rendered valuable service in the preparation of matriculated medical students for the preliminary Science Examination of the University of London -The number of students in the Engineering Department is satisfactory and the work of the Depart- ment calls for no special notice The Admiralty are contemplating the throwing open of appointments in the Engineering Branch of the Royal Navy to those who can pass an examination based on syllabus of which the subjects are covered by the course of study in the Engineering Depart- ment of the College It may be expected that this will lead to the entry of additional students to qualify for these appointments -There is every reason for satisfaction with the general condition of the Medical Department and larger proportion than usual of its students are preparing for degrees in the University of London This Department also will be materially affected by the decision of the questions referred to the Royal Commission the position of the Medical Schools of London in relation to the present University of London being one of the chief subjects which the Commission have had to consider The Council have the pleasure of recording that Dr George Johnson Consulting Physician to the Hospital and member of the Council of the College has lately received the honour of appointment as Physician Extraordinary to the Queen and the Council rejoice at this recognition of his long and eminent services to medical science Professor Gerald Yeo has received the honour of election as Fellow of the Royal Society In the place of Professor Henry Smith whose retirement the Council had to regret in their last Report they have appointed to the Chair of Surgery Mr William Rose who has for some time served with
