498 CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES The Class meets on Fridays from 15 to 45 but it advisable for Students to attend at 50 as short Special Classes free to all Students meet at this time Fees -One period of nine weeks 15s two £1 7s Books required -Brook-Smith's Arithmetic Macmillan 4s 6d King's College Junior Problems in Arithmetic to be had at the College by Students only Books recommended -Spelling Vocabulary Chamber bd Gill's Imperial Geography for Telegraph Learneis only Gill 23 Warwick Lane Paternoster Row 2s or Gill's Geography of the British Empire Is to be had at the College by Students only and Bartholomew's Elementary Atlas Macmillan Is King's College Tots to be had at the College by Students only Boy Copyists -Subjects of Examination Handwriting Orthography Tots Elementary Arithmetic Limits of ag 14 and 18 Rate of pay Ad per hour with small annua increase Hours of employment generally or per day Holidays with pay fortnight per year in addition to the Bank Holidays &c Boy Copyists are not retained as such after the age of 20 They are allowed for the purpose of Civil Service Examinations to deduct from their actual age whatever Service they may have had up to five years provided it be not less than two years Male Telegraph Learners Subjects of Examination Arithmetic highest marks attainable 300 Orthography 300 Handwriting 200 Geography of the United Kingdom 200 Limits of age 14 to 18 Male Telegraph Learners receive no salary during the first three months they then receive 12s per week After about three years' service they are appointed 2nd Class Telegraph Clerks with salary rising by £5 per year from £4 to £100 1st Class Clerks rise from £ 10 to £140 and Senior Clerks from £150 to £190 per year
