484 CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES period of service Boy Clerkships are much more difficult to obtain but they offer special advantages Boy Clerks are excused the Preliminary Examination for Men Clerkships and besides the chances of other candidates in the Open Examinations they compete among themselves for limitei number of these appointments It must be remeinbert however that Boy Clerkships and Boy Copyistships cease at 20 After passing the Boy Clerks Examination no tin should be lost in commencing preparation for Men Clerkship- or the Excise Male Telegraph Learner ships Age 14-18 pay 125 week rising to £140 year with chances of further promo tion These are recommended to those who do not feel justified in aiming at Man Clerkship or the Excise and to those who whilst hoping ultimately to gain one of these Ap pointments desire to secure at once place on the permanent Establishment In this latter respect these Appointment present considerable advantage as compared with the Boy Appointments of the preceding paragraph But they do not afford equal facilities for study the hours being longer and not always the same Telegraphists obtain the same exten- sion of age as Boy Clerks and Copyists see preceding paragraph Lower Division-Men Clerkships -If employment is not desired until 17 candidates for the Civil Service shouVi aim at Men Clerkships age 17-20 salary £95 to £250 in seven-hour offices and £80 to £200 in six-hour offices wit chance of additional pay in both cases The competition is very severe and intending candidates should therefore begin their preparation early Nearly nine-tenths of thi appointments are in London Successful candidates are subject to the convenience of the service allowed choice of locality and of office Men Clerkships are often sought as affording fairly remunerative employment in London ג hilst preparing for higher appointments in the Civil Service or elsewhere the hours being 10-5 or 10-4 only -The scale of salary for the Lower Division is being revised and the commencing salary has already been reduced to £70
