196 engineering XI The Properties of Metals -The Properties of Metals are examined by means of testing machinery &c and the composition of the metals carefully ascertained Note The Properties of Metals are modified according to the nature and the quantity of the so-called impurities they contain The quality of metal also varies with the process by which it has been extracted from its ore and the kind of mechanical treatment to which it has been subsequently subjected XII The Preparation of Alloys and the study of their properties XIII Electro-metallurgy XIV The Applications of the Spectroscope and the Micro- scope to Metallurgical Research 14 Engineering Workshops Matriculated Students The instruction given in the Workshop is divided into two branches namely Wood Work and Metal Work The Workshop is well provided writh the necessary Carpenters' Vices and Benches together with Hand-Lathes Geared and Screw-cutting Lathes Planing Drilling and other Machine- tools The Foundry is furnished with Cupola Brass furnaces Drying-stoves and other suitable appointments The Smith's Shop contains forges and well-selected stock of tools Steam-engine is placed in the vicinity of the Workshop by which the lathes machine-tools and foundry- fan are driven Model Room is attached to the Workshop in which are kept exercises examples and models to be worked to by the Students with the cost of the materials required for construction attached to each one II Students of the First Year on joining the department are made acquainted with the different Tools and their practical application to the purposes of Carpenters' and Pattern-makers work by going through the processes of preparing the wood setting out and forming from figured drawings prepared by themselves the various joints used in constructions of wood
