REPORT 683 Charles Douglas Fox Knight Engineer of Mersey Tunnel Railway Formerly Student Arthur Ernest Sansom Formerly Student now one of the Physicians of the London Hospital Samuel Hamilton Cartwright formerly Student and for twelve years Professor of Dental Surgery and Surgeon Dentist Sir Algernon Borthwick formerly Pupil of King's College London James Stephen LL Emeritus Professor of English Law now Judge of the County Court London The Council have to lament that the College has been deprived by death or retirement of the services of several of the most honoured and valued of their body Mr Beresford- Hope whose sympathy with an institution for maintaining education on the principles of the Church of England could not but be strong has been removed by death premature death has also removed Mr Theodore Walrond His personal ability and official experience as Civil Service Commissioner were of great value to the deliberations of the Council and he rendered most opportune service last year in the preparation of the Petition and the draft Charter for the proposed new University Other engagements have withdrawn Sir Richard Wilbraham from the work of the Council and advancing years have compelled the retirement of Sir John Henry Lefroy In the place of these vacancies the Council have the pleasure of stating that Sir Algernon Borthwick the Plon and Rev Glyn Mr Preece and Mr Stebbing have consented to join their body if the Annual Court should see fit to elect them The movement described by the Council in 1heir last Report for the establishment of new University in London the degrees of which would require attendance at lectures in duly qualified College and of which University College and King's College should be the first constitu- ent Colleges has been materially advanced during the year joint petition from University College and King's College lias been presented to the Privy Council with Draft Charter
