report 667 practice in conjunction with the work of Surveying The Scientific apparatus continues to receive such additions as seem necessary to meet the requirements of an increased number of students and the advances of technical know- ledge -The Medical Department again shows an increase of six It has to lament the loss by premature death of Mr Royes Bell one of the Assistant Surgeons of the Hospital Besides his professional skill he was distinguished by peculiarly generous and kindly disposition and his memory will be cherished with much affection and honour Much sorrow has also been caused in the Department within the present Term by the loss of the Resident House Accoucheur Mr O'Meara in the wreck of the Victoria Both in his career as Student and Resident Officer of the Hospital he had won high respect and warm regard and no loss could be more deplored among men of his standing The College has also to lament the almost sudden death very recently of an eminent Fellow of the College Dr Alfred Meadows In the place of Mr Royes Bell Mr Barrow has been appointed Assistant Surgeon to the Hospital and Dr Dalton has been appointed an additional Assistant Physicial -The Evening Classes show diminution of three in the number of matriculated Students but decided increase in the number of occasional Students The Department maintains its ground 'on the whole notwithstanding the severe competition which it encounters from similar classes elsewhere but careful attention is being directed towards developing its faculties and making them better known -The Ladies' Classes have fully maintained their numbers and are in all respects prosperous The number of actual Students amounts to 450 and the receipts of the Department in Fees amounted to nearly Ā£2 000 The only difficulty by which this Department is embarrassed consists
