CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES 485 Students of Division of this Department who require individual instruction or who desire instruc- tion during the vacations of their classes -NAVY EXAMINATIONS The general arrangements apply ug to this Section are ven at the head of Division II In this section are received Candidates for Naval Engineer and Naval Con- struction Studentships Subjects of Examination Arithmetic including Tots marks 300 Writing 40 Spelling 60 English Composition 100 Grammar 150 French 150 Geography 100 Algebra 300 Euclid first six books 300 Latin 150 Mechanical Drawing 100 Candidates to be successful must qualify in the first four subjects and obtain total of at least 700 marks Limits of age 14 and 17 for the April 1889 examinations for subsequent examinations 14 and 16 Examin- ations are held every April The examination is an open competitive one Successful students are trained at the public expense The full pay of the Engineering Branch of the Navy varies from that of Assistant Engineers at £137 year to that of Inspectors of Machinery with £500 rising to £700 year Candidates for Assistant Clerkships in the Navy Subjects of Examination Obligatory Dictation marks 60 Writing 40 Writing Letter on given subject 75 Writing the substance of chapter read out 75 French 150 Addition 50 Arithmetic 250 Geography and History 150 Scripture 100 Optional-Elementary Mathematics 200 Latin 200 German Spanish or Italian 100 Elementary Physics 150 Drawing 100 Three only of these unless Drawing make the
