480 CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES Division Clerks of over ten years' total service in the Inland Revenue Department In the Tax Surveying Department there are 18 Inspectors £500 to £1 000 279 Surveyors and Assistant Surveyors £100 rising by £37 10s triennially to £400 -the scale of pay attached to the Higher Division Clerkships in the Civil Service -CUSTOMS See page 472 for arrangements that are common to all Classes in Division Competitions are generally held three times year-about the end of January May September The courses of preparation for these competitions begin respectively in the second half of October February and June They last about thirteen weeks consisting of two periods of six or seven weeks each The General Classes meet from 45 to 45 on Monday and one other evening-which depends on the standard of in- struction required It is generally advisable to attend at as there are short Special Classes at this hour free to all Students Fees -One evening per week Monday One period of or weeks 17s two £1 8s Two evenings per week One period £1 8s two £2 6s Those who join for one evening week will attend on Mondays The instruction given on this evening constitutes complete course of preparation Students with their whole time for preparation should attend on two evenings Subjects of Examination Arithmetic including Tots highest marks attainable 300 English Composition 200 Orthography 200 Handwriting 200 Books required -Brook-Smith's Arithmetic Macmillan 4s Boy Clerks' and Customs Arithmetic Papers 8d to be had at the College by Students only As the interval between the Examinations varies slightly and the dates are announced only few weeks previously it is impossible to say exactly what will be the length of the course or of the period
