civil service CLASSES 475 College by Students only King's College Digesting Returns into Summaries Ad to be bad at the College by Students only King's College Arithmetic and Book-keeping Papers 9c to be had at the College by Students only Recommended Spelling Vocabulary Chambers Abbott's How to Write Clearly for Composition Seeley 15 6c Mackay's Physiography Blackwood Is 6c Col- lins's Progressive Atlas Is 6c King's College Tots 6d to be had at the College by Students only Men Clerks -Candidates must be between 17 and 20 About nine-tenths of the Appointments are in London Subject to the convenience of the public service successful candidates are allowed choice of locality and choice of offices Men Clerks rise by triennial increments of £15 from £95 to £250 in seven-hour offices and from £80 to £200 in six-hour offices The most competent of them may receive extra pay not exceeding £100 year They may after ten years' service be promoted exceptionally to the Higher Division They are at any time eligible for the open Com- petitions for the Higher Division and all other Appointments if between the prescribed limits of age and the upper limit is extended in favour of persons already in the service see on page 470 Customs Outport Clerks -The term Outport is applied to all the Ports of the United Kingdom where there is Customs Establishment excepting London alone These appointments are in future to be filled partly by examinations limited to out-door Officers of Customs see page 481 and partly by open examinations The limits of age for the open examin- ations are 17 and 20 2nd Class Clerks rise from £70 by £5 annually for years then by £10 to £200 Many 2nd Class Clerks have special allowances in addition to the above service salary They are eligible for promotion without examination to- 1st Class Clerkships £220-£15-£400 and Outport Collectorships £200-£1 200 As open competitions will not be frequent and the clerkships filled by them not numerous success may be delayed even though it may be certain Candidates are therefore advised meantime to take
