×™ GENERAL LITERATURE 107 beyond its practical details The lectures will also be adapted to those who though not engaged in business yet desire some knowledge of Political Economy as part of general educa- tion Especial attention will be paid to students who are reading for Examinations in particular for the London Univer- sity It is proposed to give such students individual assistance after the hour of the lecture In these lectures it is intended to present general outline of the most important and best established principles of Political Economy The first course Michaelmas 1888 will begin with the inquiry In what does wealth consist What is meant by the increase of people wealth The causes upon which the increase of wealth depends form the next subject Next will be considered the principle of Competition deter- mining both the rates of exchange between different products and the distribution of what may be called the net produce of country inclusive of taxes between the different classes who have contributed to its production principally landlords capitalists labourers and managers or entrepreneurs The consideration of these four interests will be resumed in the second course of lectures Lent 1889 Attention will be given to the incidents of different forms of Land Tenure and to proposals for ameliorating the condition of labourers si ch as Industrial Partnership and Co-operation The theory of International Trade including the vexed questions relating to Free-trade and Protection will occupy the last two lectures of the Lent Term The principal parts of the Economic Mechanism having been examined it will be attempted to analyse what has been called the oil of the Machine-Money This subject will occupy the Summer Term The following are the principal topics The conditions of good Metallic Currency The theory and history of inconvertible paper-currency The nature and use of Bank-notes Bank-deposits and other varieties of Credit-money The causes of fluctuation in general prices How far the appreciation or depreciation of Gold is due to deficiency or excess in the quantity of metallic currency How far to the conditions of credit How the effect of such
