482 CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES ENGINEER STUDENTSHIPS IN THE NAVY AND STUDENTSHIPS IN NAVAL CONSTRUCTION Preparation for these appointments is given in Class and the subjects of examination are given on 467 Examinations for the selection of Naval Engineer Student and Naval Construction Students to undergo training in Her Majesty's Dockyards are held annually in April These appointments are open to public competition tlie limits of age being 14 and 16 Four annual payments are made by the parents or guardians of Engineer Students for the training given these being £311 each year for the first two years and £20 each year for the two subsequent years About three-fourths of the total amount is however returned to the Students in the shape of pocket-money the allowances varying from Is week to Students in their first year to 8s week to those in their sixth The education and training given to qualify the Students for positions as Naval Engineers are of the highest order extending over period of six years and the life led by tli Students at the Dockyards is well-regulated and most pleasant one The full pay including mess allowances of the Engineering Branch of the Navy is as follows -Assistant Engineers-first year £137 next three or four years £164 per year Assistants then become Engineers with salaries rising from 1'P to £246 At about the age of 36 Engineers become Chief Engineers with salaries rising from £264 to £429 and as vacancies occur Chief Engineers are appointed Inspector of Machinery with salaries rising from £500 to £700 per year Chief Engineers and some Engineers receive in addition charge money varying from £20 to £100 per year After about thirty years' service an Engineer Officer promoted in
