CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES 479 nned Collectors' clerks are appointed on application from First Class Assistants The limits of age for the Excise Examination are 19 and 22 ears Assistants when first appointed must he unmarried but hey can marry after six months' service The Laboratory competitive examination is held mnually among the Assistants for about eight Scholarships enable for two years in the Chemical Laboratory Somerset House During the two years the selected officers receive heir full pay and grant of £10 for the purchase of books he best have prospect of future appointment in the Laboratory as permanent Analysts of whom receive £130 ising by £15 annually to £300 £350-£20-£500 £550-£650 £900 Lower Division Clerkships -The Lower Division Clerkships the Inland Revenue Department nearly all £95-£250 ire now filled by Examinations open to Assistants and other Jfficers of Excise of over three years' service and it is 3rovided that there shall be no loss of salary on transfer to me of the Clerkships Assistant Surveyorships of Taxes -These Appointments are iow to be made by selection and examination from Lower Division Clerks of over ten years' total seivice in the Inland Revenue Department In the Tax Surveying Department there are 19 Inspectors £500 to £1 000 265 Surveyors and Assistant Surveyors £100 ising by £37 10s triennially to £400 -the scale of pay ittached to the Higher Division Clerkships in the Civil Service IV CUSTOMS Competitions are generally held three times year-about he end of January May September The courses of preparation for these competitions begin espectively in the second half of October February and
