476 CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES years' service they are appointed 2nd Claee Telegraph Clerk with salary rising by £5 per vear from £45 to £10 let Clue Clerks rise from £110 to £140 and Senior Clerks from £16 to £190 per year III EXCISE Competitions are generally held twice year-in May an November Courses of preparation commence about the end of Decern ber and June and continue until the May and Novemboi Examinations respectively Their duration is about 18 to weeks divided into three periods of or weeks each Students are recommended to attend the whole course but they can if they wish join for any one period Any one joining the Class and proving successful in the previous competition will have returned to him the portion of his fee that is unexpired when the result made known but fees are not returned in any other circumstances The General Classes meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 45 to 45 But it is generally advisable to attend at as there are short Special Classes beginning at this hour and free to all Students The Fees are as follows One evening per week Wednesday For one period £1 for two £1 13 for thiee £2 48 Two evenings per week For one period £1 13 for two £2 158 for three £3 158 The period is six or seven weeks The Class is divided for Arithmetic only into First an Second Section Upon joining Students are examined and placed in the Section which will give them the help they need If placed in the Second they will be moved to the Firet immediately they are found qualified As the interval between the Examinations varies slightly end the date are announced only few weeks previously it is impossible to eay exactly what wiU be the length of the couree or of the period
