464 CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES period of service Boy Clerkships are much more difficult tc obtain but they offer special advantages -Boy Clerks are excused the Preliminary Examination for Men Clerkships and besides the chances of other Candidates in the Open Examinations they compete among themselves for limited number of these appointments After passing the Boy Clerks' Examination no time should be lost in commencing preparation for Men Clerkships or the Excise Lower Division-Men Clerkships see page 471 -If em- ployment is not desired until 17 candidates for the Civil Service should aim at Men Clerkships age 17-20 salary £95 to £250 in seven-hour offices and £80 to £200 in six-hour offices with chance of additional pay in both cases The Competition is very severe and intending Candidates should therefore begin their preparation early Nearly nine-tenths of these appointments are in London Successfuljcandidates are subject to the convenience of the Service allowed choice of locality and of office Men Clerkships are often sou-lit as affording fairly remunerative employment in London whilst preparing for higher appointments in the Civil Service or elsewhere the hours being 10-5 or 10-4 only Excise Appointments see page 476 -Excise appointments age 19-22 salary £80 to £220 with very fair prospect of rising to £350 and many still higher salaries ate scattered over the United Kingdom and present greater variety of duties-not exclusively clerical candidate for Man Clerk- ship becoming over age without obtaining an appointment and still wishing to enter the Civil Service cannot do better than compete for an Excise appointment the value of which is quite equal to that of Man Clerkship we perso from 8erve Out-door Customs Appointments see page 481 -Candidates ce who are too old for the Excise have the Out-door Department of the Customs open to them age 19- with chance of promotion to higher appointments No one who has not robust constitution should enter this service pK for the hours are very irregular and the duties involve much &Α 25 salary £55 to J100 fc
