APPLIED SCIENCES 183 The Elements of Mechanism and Workshop Appliances in Longman's series of Text Books of Science are used by the Students Ascertaining Surveying and Civil Engineering First Year Lecture Room from 15 to every Friday during the Academical Year Field Work at 10 every Saturday in the Easter Term The subjects dealt with in the First Year are The Appli- cation of Practical Geometry to the purposes of Surveyor and Engineer Standards of Length Scales Areas Division of Land the Chain and Offset Staff Surveying by Chain Chain Angles Base Lines Field Book Surveying Symbols Continuing and Measuring Base Lines when Obstructed Distances to Inaccessible Objects Erecting Perpendiculars with the Chain Classification of Surveys Practical Difficulties in Surveying Traverse Surveying Cross Optical Square Prismatic Compass Circumferentor Theodolite Level Level Staff Box Sextant Clinometer Hypothenusal and other errors in Chaining Meridian Varia- tion Vernier Plotting Plan Drawing Transferring Enlarging and Reducing Pentagraph Eidograph Levelling Field Book Plotting Sections The Practical Instruction in the Field during the Easter Term consists in carrying out Chain Survey explanatory of the usual difficulties that are met with in practice Levelling is commenced and the various instruments which have been described in the lectures are used in the field Second Year Lecture Room from to every Friday during the Michael- mas and Lent Terms Field Work at 10 every alternate Saturday in the same Terms The Second Year course deals both in the Lecture Room and in the Field with extended surveying operations Surveys
