486 CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES Examinations are held at intervals varying from four tc seven months Boy Clerks are excused the Preliminary Examination foi Men Clerkships and are thus enabled to devote their entire attention to the Final Examination they can also give more time to the special subjects of the latter examination as by studying for Boy Clerkships they have rendered themselves more or less proficient in the elementary subjects Boy Copyists are therefore strongly advised to press on for Boy Clerkships Boy Copyistships -Limits of age 14 and 18 Rate of pay 4d per hour The attention of Boy Copyists is directed to the preceding paragraph Men Copyisiships -Candidates may be of any age over 18 Rate of pay 100 per hour Subjects of Examination Handwriting Spelling Copying Manuscript Copying Figures and Tabular Statements Arithmetic Examinations far Boy Copyists are held at intervals of about three months The Open Competitions for Men Copyists have been for some time suspended and it is scarcely expected that they will be soon resumed vacancies are at present filled by examinations open to Boy Clerks and Boy Copyists between 18J and 19 years of age Hours of employ- ment for Men and Boy Copyists from six to eight hours per day Holidays with pay fortnight per year in addition to the Bank Holidays etc Male Telecpxtph Learner ships -Boys should not compete for these appointments until they find by competing in two or three examinations for Boy Clerkships that they have no prospect of success for the latter appointments If while preparing for Boy Clerkships students desire employment they should become Boy Copyists Male Telegraph Learners receive no salary during the first three months they then receive 125 per week After about three years' service they are appointed 2nd Class Telegraph
