76 REPORT regards payment and their period of pupilage is in many cases shortened especially in the case of those students who have passed through the full College course There has been considerable enlargement of the Photo- graphic Department giving double accommodation for students and also an enlargement of the College workshops and additional mechanical appliances have been provided to meet the demands of the increasing number of students Mr Thomas Brodie who was last year an Occasional Student of this Department in the Wheatstone Laboratory gained first class in Honours in Physics as well as first class in Honours in Chemistry at the Intermediate Examination for the Sc degree at the London University and obtained last Christmas Scholarship at St John's College Cambridge for Mathematics He became Matriculated Student of this department in October and obtained the Clothworkers' Exhi- bition of £50 Mr Bouton who like Mr Brodie came up to the College from the School obtained Freake Exhibition in October The second Clothworkers' Exhibition was gained by Mr Atkinson The Council have made valuable addition to the Engi- neering Department of the Library in complete set of the Annates des Fonts et Chaussees work which is very scarce indeed in its entire form and which will be of great value to the students not only on account of its giving full and illustrated description of all the public Engineering Works in France since about 1838 but also of affording the students an opportunity of acquiring the French technical terms used in building and engineering construction It must also be mentioned that the Council of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers have through their President liberally offered to give to the College complete copy of their Pro- ceedings from the commencement which will of course be of great value to the Engineering Students The offer has been gratefully accepted on behalf of the Council -In the Medical Department there has been diminu- tion in the number of entries 10 as compared with last year
