348 department for ladies as preparation for the reading of an easy Latin Author and the acquisition of sound knowledge of Syntax in the Lent and Easter Terms of 1886 The book used at first will be Dr Abbott's Via Latina" Seeley Co Intermediate Class By Warr Professor of Classical Literature Wednesday This class is intended to form second year's course in Latin in continuation of the Elementary Class The year will be devoted to the reading of Latin Author and selections for translation into English and to the acquisi- tion of sound and adequate knowledge of Latin Syntax by translations into Latin The book used for composition will be Dr Abbott's Latin Prose through English Idiom Advanced Class By Edgeworth Thursday It is hoped that this class will contain many candidates for the Matriculation and higher examinations of the London University The books will be principally those which are prescribed by the London University for the year 1885 namely Virgil "JEneid Books viii and ix Ovid iC Metamorphoses 5' Book and Tristia Book Livy Book xxii Horace Odes and Epistles Book This programme will be modified according to the require- ments of the students for instance in favour of those who may be reading for the higher Local Examinations for women For Latin Prose Composition Bennett's Second Latin Writer" Rivington's is recommended Written translation from unseen passages will be practised Grammar and Philology will form portion of each lesson
