APPLIED SCIENCES 206 rough course of exercises in chipping and filing and 1'tting up plane surfaces by the Whitworth method and in Foundry they are instructed in the arts of moulding and casting in iron and in brass In the Lent Term Second Year Students will be again vided for instruction in Smiths work which will be given ernately with specified set of Exercises in Metal-turning id Machine-tool work commencing with the use of hand- irning tools and screw-chasing tools In Easter Term Students areinstructed in the art of working Sheet Metals and Soldering and after having attained work- lanlike proficiency in all the above branches of handicraft the satisfaction of the Superintendent they are permitted enter upon the construction of complete machines draw- lgs and patterns of which are provided for the use of utudents IV Third Year Students continue the Construction of the lachines which they have already commenced at the termi- Jation of their Second Year and may proceed with Models in lustration of the different contrivances used in Practical lechanics and Manufactures and in experiments on the trength of material and of structures such as arches beams nd girders designed drawn and executed by the Students hemselves Permission is given at the discretion of the Superintendent Third Year Students to bring in work of their own but must be executed under the direction and according to the dans of the Superintendent At the termination of the year Prize is given in each ear for general merit in the work done in the Shop during he preceding year and for the result of an examination the book entitled Workshop Appliances '' Longman's Series These prizes are determined by Professer Shelley and Ihe Superintendent together VI Every Student is expected to furnish himself with et of the simplest tools requisite for working in wood and netals The Student may purchase his tools at the College
