172 GENERAL LITERATURE AND SCIENCE General Rules Candidates for the "Carter" and "Stephenמ Prizes must deliver their Compositions to the Secretary before two o'clock on Saturday June 1885 The author of each Exercise is required to conceal his name and to distinguish his composition by some motto sending in at the same time his name sealed up under cover bearing the same motto The friends of the Rev John Sherren Brewer late Professor of English Literature and Modern History have purchased the sum of £130 London and North Western Railway Four per Cent Stock for the purpose of founding Prize which shall bear his name The Annual Interest of &6 5s is given in books It is open only to Matriculated Students of this Department and is given in June for the best work in Modern History through- out the preceding Academical Year The holder of the Inglis Historical Scholarship cannot obtain this Prize in the same year that he gets his Scholar- 1879 Saunders Thomas Bailey 1880 Chapman John 1881 Clarke John Michell 1882 Hill Harcourt Henry 1883 Whittingham Walter Godfrey 1884 Hardinfif Alfred Arthur General Sir Richard Wilbraham gives annually Prize of Books to the value of Five Guineas It is open only to Matriculated Students of this Department and is given in June for the best work in English Literature through- out the preceding Academical Year JSrctocr Prizemen
