THEOLOGICAL DEPARTMENT 107 the Subjects of the Preliminary Examination for the year 1885 and the arrangements above stated may thus come gradually into operation in the course of the latter year The following are the Subjects of the Preliminary Examination for the year 1885 and those determined by the Joint Committee of the Bishops and the Council of the Preliminary Examination for the year 1886 The Examinations in 1885 to be held about Easter and in October will be in the following Subjects general paper on the Contents of the Bible with Ques- tions on 'Introduction ×™ in reference to the selected Books of the Old and New Testaments Old Testament Psalms Book II 42-72 Candidates will be expected to be acquainted with the Bible and Prayer-Book Psalters II Kings with parallel passages in Chronicles The paper in these books will contain questions on their subjeot-matter criticism and exegesis An opportunity will be given for shewing knowledge of the Hebrew and Septuagint texts of the selected books of the Old Testament voluntary paper will also be set on the last day of the Examination on Elementary Hebrew with passages for translation from Kings xvii -end New Testament in Greek The Gospel according to St Matthew The Epistle to the Galatians and the Epistles of St John The paper in these books will contain passages for trans- lation and questions on the subject-matter criticism and exegesis of the books Passages from the English Version will be given to be rendered into the original Greek These subjects will be set also in 1886
