76 REPORT Drawing Speaking generally the Classes in Religious Kuowledge History Language and Literature are most largely attended those in Harmony and Drawing come next and the Classes in Mathematics and Physical Science have always been small The work in all is however steady and substantial and the Examinations which are voluntary are well attended Α -The Theological Department has slightly diminished in numbers in this Term although the average of the year stands as high as the year preceding Its work calls for no special remark having gone on quietly and satisfactorily No less than 33 Students have received the Testamur during the year and of these the Examiners were able to place 15 in the First Class The number of Associates is now 748 of whom 285 passed in the First Class In this Department the Council have to announce with much regret the resignation of the Chair of Pastoral Theo- logy after twenty years of excellent service by the Ven Archdeacon Cheetham In him the Department loses singularly able and conscientious teacher man of solid learning and judgment and loyal and kindly worker for the good of the College Into the place thus vacated the Council have elected the Rev Η Swete formerly Fellow and Tutor of Gonville and Caius Colleges well known as learned Theologian and able writer and teacher On Dr Swete's nomination they have also elected as Lecturer in Pastoral Theology in the room of the Rev Mackarness the Rev Shuttleworth Minor Canon of St Paul's -The Department of General Literature and Science remains in numbers much as at the time of last Report and the work of the past year presents no special occasion for remark The Council regret to announce the death last summer of the Rev Professor Drew who had retired short time
