422 CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES preparation for Outport Clerkships Outport Clerkships are open to all Men Clerks between 17 and 20 and to Men Clerks beyond that age if they have had two years' service -It is likely that great changes will be made in the Customs and that in consequence no more examinations for Customs Outport Clerkships will be held for some time III EXCISE APPOINTMENTS MR WALKE Courses of preparation of about 18 weeks duration begin in January and July and continue until the Excise examina- tions held in May and November respectively The Class meets from to 15 on Tuesdays Fee for the whole course £2 5s for the second period beginning weeks after the opening of the course £1 125 6d Students are strongly recommended to join at the beginning of the course and also to join the Supplementary Class see next paragraph Supplementary Class meets on Thursdays from 45 to during about the last eight weeks of the course The course of preparation is complete without this class but all students are recommended to avail themselves of its assis- tance Fees for the two classes -for the whole course £3 3s for the second period £2 10s 6d Students requiring further assistance should attend Class see page 417 Fees are not refunded under any circumstances Students who wish to begin or continue their studies during the vacation of the Excise Class are recommended to attend Class fees will be arranged for any period one or two evenings per week at the rate of 6d per evening Subjects of Examination -Obligatory Handwriting highest marks attainable 400 Orthography 400 Arithmetic to Vulgar and Decimal Fractions 400 English Composition 400 -Optional Higher Arithmetic and Mensuration 400 Geography 400
