414 CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES vr ibH Serine Department Names of Lecturers William Braginton Director John Wood Andrew James Walke Robert Hinks Robert Harcourt Comyn ADVICE TO CANDIDATES FOR THE CIVIL SERVICE It is better that Candidate for Civil Service Appointment should have the whole of his time to prepare for his Examin- ation business occupation however especially if it be light-as that afforded by the Civil Service itself -is by no means incompatible with success and as matter of fact large proportion of all appointments except the Class are gained by Candidates who have been able to devote only their evenings to their preparation Boy Clerkships and Boy Copyistships see page 424 -If employment is desired before 17 Boy Clerkship age 15-17 pay 14s week rising Is week per year until 19 years of age will leave more time for preparation for Man Clerkship or the Excise than most other employments the hours being usually only 10-4 It is better that candidates for Boy Clerkships should devote all their time to their preparatory studies but if their success is delayed and immediate employment is necessary they may take situations as Boy Copyists age 14-18 pay id per hour the examinations for which are easy and frequent Boy Copyists however as well as unsuccessful candidates for Boy Clerkships generally should as long as they are eligible endeavour to pass the Ex- animation for Boy Clerkships before beginning direct pre-
