1qo APPLIED SCIENCES II Students of the First Year on joining the department are made acquainted with the different Tools and their practical application to the purposes of Carpenters'and Pattem-malcers' -work by going through the processes of preparing the wood setting out and forming from figured drawings prepared by themselves the various joints used in constructions of wood Students in their Second Term are instructed in turnino Soft and Hard Woods and other substances and also in the mode of preparing and fixing the work in the Lathe they are thus enabled to proceed with set of exercises specially designed with view to the attainment of skill in hand turning After having obtained proficiency in the use of the tools Students are instructed in making Models in which the preceding exercises are combined and which will also include the construction of Patterns and Core-boxes ready to be moulded from in the Foundry III Second Year Students are divided into Classes at the commencement of Micbaelmas Term and are instructed in Metal work and Moulding In the Fitting-Shop they go through course of exercises in chipping and filing and getting up plane surfaces by the Whitworth method and in the Foundry they are instructed in the arts of moulding and of casting in iron and in brass In the Lent Term Second Year Students will be again divided for instruction in Smith's work which will be given alternately with specified set of Exercises in Metal-turning and Machine-tool work commencing with the use of hand- turning tools and screw-chasing tools In Easter Term Students areinstructed in the art of working in Sh eet Metals and Soldering and after having attained work- manlike proficiency in all the above branches of handicraft to the satisfaction of the Superintendent they are permitted to enter upon the construction of complete machines draw ings and patterns of which are provided lor the use of Students IV Third Year Students continue the Construction of the
