ANNUAL REPORT 81 numerously attended especially by friends and members past and present of the College remarkably thoughtful and eloquent sermon was preached by the Bishop of Durham on the union of the secular and religious life in allegiance to Jesus Christ as embodied in the Sancte et Sapienter of the College motto which treated of an interesting sketch of the half century of its existence with brief notice of the past history of the College itself and of the extension of its work now contemplated The whole occasion was one which will not easily be forgotten by those who took part in the service and it stamped the celebration of the Jubilee with the religious character which has from the beginning been faithfully preserved in all the progress of the College On June 24th Public Meeting was held at Willis's Booms under the presidency of the Archbishop of Canterbury partly to celebrate the Anniversary partly to inaugurate publicly the movement for the Higher Education of Women under the auspices of the College The Meeting was addressed by the Chairman Lord Salisbury Lord Carnarvon Sir John Mowbray Mr Clarke Sir Richard Wilbraham and the Bishop of London and in the hands of such speakers it will be easily understood that both the objects of the Meeting were very ably dealt with On Saturday July 2nd the Prince and Princess of Wales visited the College on occasion of the delivery of Prizes to the General Literature and Science and Applied Sciences Departments and the Prince in his address at the close of the proceedings expressed his high appreciation of the work of the College and his sympathy with the proposed extension of its benefits to the education of Women On the evening of the same day Conversazione was held attended by about 000 persons chiefly old members and friends of the College and serving admirably its purpose as an occasion of rejoicing in the prosperity granted to the College and of kindling or renewing interest in its fortunes The Fund for the foundation of new department for Women at Kensington or elsewhere has as yet received Donations to the extent of about £5 000 including Contri-
