74 ANNUAL REPORT strength of materials up to strain of 50 000 lbs They prize these gifts not only for their intrinsic value but as evidences of appreciation of the good work done in this Department -The Medical Department has again slightly advanced in numbers from 210 to 215 and stands higher than at any previous period during the last 25 years The work of the Department calls for no special remark having gone on most satisfactorily during the past year The Hospital among others was visited by the International Medical Conference and great interest was exhibited in the development within its walls of the Antiseptic treatment No changes have taken place in the Staff In connection especially with this Department the Council have to announce with satisfaction the foundation of Prize of £15 for excellence in Botany by bequest from George Redsull Carter Esq -The Evening Class Work has gone on as usual with full efficiency although with somewhat diminished numbers This is probably due to the large increase in the number of Evening Classes elsewhere generally at lower fees-the Society for the Extension of University Teaching and others -The Classes held in the Evening though not part of the regular Evening Class Department are assuming con- siderable importance The School of Practical Art is working satisfactorily although the numbers are still small The Workshop Class is also efficient and useful But the Civil Classes under Mr Bragintonand his assistants have attained remarkable development from 140 in 1875 to 782 in 1882 and during the year 321 appointments in the Civil Service 'have been gained by Students in these Classes -The School continues to flourish It maintains its large numbers-312 in the Upper School 186 in the Middle
