annual report 73 In the post thus vacated out of many excellent Candidates the Council have appointed the Rev Gr Curteis Canon of Lichfield and for many years the successful and energetic Head of the Lichfield Theological College They have also received with regret the resignation of the Chaplaincy and Theological Lectureship of the Rev Mackarness and have appointed in his place the Rev Daniell of Balliol College Oxford jB -The work of the Department of General Literature and Science calls for no remark The numbers and the work of the Department remain much the same as in the last year In connection with this Department and the Department of Applied Sciences the Council have received with much regret the resignation from ill health by the Rev Drew of the Mathematical Professorship which he had held for more than 12 years and in which he had done very able and excellent Service to the College winning the respect and affection both of his Colleagues and of the many Students under his charge In his place the Council have appointed Η Hudson late fellow of St John's College Cambridge 2nd Wrangler in 1861 and Honorary Fellow of King's College Prize of £15 has been founded during the past year for Original English Verse by means of bequest from George Redsull Carter Esq -The Department of Applied Sciences has risen from 53 to 69 and has continued to work with energy and success In connection with this Department the Council have great pleasure in announcing the foundation of Gold Medal by Dr Siemens to be given annually as the reward of the best work done in the new Metallurgical Department under Professor Huntingdon and another liberal gift from the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers to whom the College is already so largely indebted This is Testing Machine of the value of £250 capable of testing the
