72 ANNUAL REPORT Α The Theological Department has five fewer Students than it had last year The preparatory Class is unusually small but the Classes in the regular Day Department have considerably increased and stand at higher level than for many years past The Evening Class though it yields ex- eellent results in respect of work and has supplied some of our best Students is not so numerous as was expected-the work being perhaps found rather too onerous in addition to professional duty during the day The general work of the Department has been steady and satisfactory and 23 Students have obtained the Testamur and been ordained during the past year The number of Associates in this Department is now 703 of whom 264 passed out in the First Class In this Department the Council have to announce with mingled satisfaction and regret the resignation by Dr Plumptre of the Professorship of New Testament Exegesis on his appointment to the Deanery of Wells They had satisfaction in marking their sense of his services to the College in the following Eesolution which they believe well expresses the opinion of the Court and of all who are interested in the College Resolved -" That the Council in accepting Dr Plumptre's resignation of his Professorship and Ci congratulating him on the well earned Ecclesias- "tical promotion which he has received -desire to express their sincere regret at the approaching severance of his long connexion with the College "and their deep sense of obligation for the in- valuable services rendered by him to the Insti- tution during the last 35 years which have earned for him the respect and affection of all who have during that long period been connected "with the College and which will still leave behind them the influence of high example of ability conscientiousness and devotion
