CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES 425 the Men Clerks1 Examination for the former is useful preparation for the elementary work of the latter and Boy Clerks are not required to pass the Men Clerks Preliminary Examination Boys on becoming Boy Clerks should lose no time in commencing preparation for Men Clerkships or the Excise Lower Division-Men Clerkships see page 428 -If em- ployment is not desired until after 17 but soon after that age candidates for the Civil Service should aim at Men Clerkships age 17-20 salary £95 to £250 in seven hour offices and £80 to £200 in six hour offices with chance of additional pay in both cases As man Clerk's salary depends on the length of his service and not on his age it is important to secure an appointment as soon after 17 as possible Men Clerkships are often sought as affording fairly remunerative employment in London whilst preparing for higher appointments in the Civil Service or elsewhere the hours being 10-5 or 10-4 only Excise Appointments and Assistant Survey orships of Taxes see page 431 -Candidates who prefer the Excise age 19-22 salary £95 to £200 and numerous higher appoint- ments with its periodical change of locality travelling expenses paid by the Government and its greater variety of duties-not exclusively clerical-should commence their pre- paration in good time with view to securing an appointment as soon after 19 as possible for here too salary depends on service and not on age candidate for Man Clerkship becoming over age without obtaining an appointment and still wishing to enter the Civil Service cannot do better than compete for an Excise appointment the value of which is quite equal to that of Man Clerkship Success in the Excise Examination is the only means of entrance to the compe- titions for Assistant Survey or ships of Taxes salary £100 to £400 with chance of additional pay and still higher appointments Men Copyistships see page 434 -Candidates preparing for Men Clerkships or Excise Appointments who desire employ- ment in the meantime are often able to obtain situations as
