higher education of women 81 distinct from the others but under the same system and government in which the advantages hitherto enjoyed by male students may be extended to women also and the'work which has been tentatively but auspiciously begun may be completely and permanently organised For this purpose they are already taking steps to obtain the necessary statutory powers They cannot however carry this desire into effect from the- existing resources of the College which are already heavily burdened They believe that the new Department only needs the erection and fitting up of building sufficient for imme diate purposes on site which should be large enough to admit of future expansion and that when once started it will be self-supporting but they do not feel justified in taking any action until sufficient sum has been raised to effect this without trenching on the existing College Funds For this purpose and for preliminary expenses it has been estimated that sum of £25 000 will be required and for this sum the Council earnestly appeal to public support It is proposed that Donors of £100 shall become Members of the Corporation of King's College with power to bequeath such Membership and that Donors of £50 shall become Members of the Corporation for life The Council have resolved that Donors of £50 to the new Department shall be allowed for the period of their own lifes to nominate in each Term one student to the Women's Classes at reduction of one-fourth of whatever fees may be due for that Term provided the deduction does not exceed £1 15 and that Donors of £100 may nominate in each Term two students on the same condition or one student at reduction of half the fees provided the deduction does not exceed £2 2s The appeal of the Council is mainly to English Churchmen on behalf of what is believed to be the largest Church Edu- cational Institution in the country which from the beginning has endeavoured to work upon principles as comprehensive as those of the Church itself But as the College opens its doors freely and unconditionally to all and while offering Religious reaching and Worship as its highest privileges enforces
