80 higher education OF women College has since that time continuously extended its opera- tions till at the present time it embraces seven distinct although united Departments and educates regularly about 900 students and 600 boys in the School At this moment the necessity for new and important development has been strongly urged upon the Council The chief step of educational progress now generally felt to be necessary and commanding accordingly large share of public interest and support is the promotion of the Higher Education of Women Much has been done already in this direction but the Council feel the strongest conviction that this work cannot be carried out to its truest perfection except on those sound and time-honoured principles on which under God blessing the work of King's College has advanced successfully for the last half century Without undervaluing the work of other Educational Institutions in this cause the Council have reason to believe from experience that there is abundant room for the action of King's College and that this action will be cordially welcomed and supported by those who hold firmly to the principles which it represents and who see in its constitution and character security for the loyal preservation of these principles The Lectures to Ladies given at Kensington for the last three years by the Principal and members of the Academical Staff under the sanction of the Council although carried on under some difficulties have achieved large and unexpected success Classes are already at work in Holy Scripture and Church History in Logic and Political Economy in History Ancient and Modern in English Latin Greek French German and Italian Language and Literature in Arithmetic and Mathematics in Chemistry Physiology and Botany and in Harmony and Drawing and the entries to these Classes average above 500 in each Term י χλκ -Afefej The Council therefore believe that they cannot signalise the Fiftieth Anniversary of the College better than by attempting this important development of its usefulness They desire to create new Department of the College locally
