4Ϊ0 CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES Outport Collectorships whose value ranges from £200 £500 and still higher First Class Clerkships and Collector ships are filled wholly by promotion of Second Class Clerks and are together nearly as numerous as the Second Class Clerkships Thus in the Outport Clerical Establishment there are nearly as many persons with salaries of £200 and above as with salaries of less than £200 From fifteen to twenty vacancies will probably occur each year Outport Clerkships being of much higher value than Men Clerkships will be much more sought and consequently much more difficult to obtain Candidates are advised there- fore not to aim solely at Outport Clerkships but to obtain Men Clerkships as soon as possible and then continue their preparation for Outport Clerkships Outport Clerkships are open to all Men Clerks between 17 and 20 and to Men Clerks beyond that age if they have had two years' service -It is not unlikely that great changes may be made in the Customs and that in consequence no more examinations for Customs Outport Clerkships may be held for very considerable time EXCISE APPOINTMENTS MR WALKE Courses of preparation of about 20 lessons begin early in ן January and July and continue until the Excise examinations held in May and November respectively There are three admissions in each course at the beginning six weeks later 12 weeks later Fees -For the whole course £2 ts 6d from the second admission until the examination £1 12s Qd from the third admission until the examination lessons £1 15 Hours of attendance -6 to 15 on Tuesday evenings and on two additional evenings at the end of the course Subjects of Examination -Obligatory Handwriting highest marks attainable 400 Orthography 400 Arithmetic to
