applied sciences 181 Individual Instruction is given to Students in various branches of Fine Art such as Drawing from the Flat and from the Antique Monochrome Drawing on Wood Painting on China Etching the application of Plant and other Natural forms to Decoration and General Designing This School is established to meet some of those serious deficiencies in Modern Art Education which have long pre- vented the elevation of popular taste and have compelled Art Manufacturers and Publishers to employ foreign artists and workmen The demand for better class of Art draughtsmen has for some time made itself heard but it may be questioned whether the efforts hitherto made to supply an acknowledged want have not confined Art teaching too much within the narrow limits of bare mechanical copying and drawing and have too often failed to stimulate the student to observe read think and generalize for him- self The greatest successes of the periods to which artists always look back with reverence and sometimes with despair were achieved by men who loved studied and reproduced the beauties of Nature and to follow faithfully their methods rather than to aim at servile copies of their works is the aim of the present School For fees see page 192 For several prizes offered in connection with this class see page 355 13 Metallurgy Established by aid of the City and Guilds Institute Third Year Students -Mondays 15-2 15 Thursdays 3-4 in Easter Term Fridays 4-5 in Michaelmas and Lent Terms י ז 'fi'il י The course of lectures is designed for all those who in any way have to do practically with the applications of metals It treats of the methods by which metals are obtained from their ores and the means by which they are rendered suitable for the various requirements of the Arts
