ANNUAL REPORT 65 On this list it may be well to remark That in the Oxford and Cambridge School Examination 25 boys gained certificates-a number only exceeded by Eton -and that King's College School accordingly stood second in the list of all Schools which sent in Candidates That besides the Open Scholarships gained at the Universities great distinction has been achieved in the Woolwich Examinations and that boy of the King's College School not only stood first in the Examination but gained the largest number of marks ever obtained in the Competition That the School continues to send up boys into the Senior Departments of the College who carry off marked distinctions therein During the year there have been two or three important changes in the Staff The Rev Hayes after forty-two years of active labour in the School has resigned and the Council marked their appreciation of his long and valued services by granting him substantial retiring pension In consequence of this resignation Mr Brown has been promoted to the charge of the Lower Fifth Form Mr Eade to that of the Upper and Middle Fourth on the Classical side and Mr Larcher to that of the Upper Fourth on the Modern Side of the School Several of the Masters in the Middle and Lower Schools have also been promoted to higher forms and the Middle and Lower First Classes have been entrusted to Mr Βέηβ of Queen's College Cambridge Classical Tripos 1877 Professor Delainotte has been elected by the Council to the new Professorship of Practical Fine Art in the College and has consequently been obliged to resign the charge of the Drawing in the Middle and Lower Departments of the School He still continues however to give instruction in Landscape Drawing and Painting to the Upper School while Mr Jones has been appointed to the Mastership in Drawing vacated by Professor Delamotte Ε
