56 ANNUAL REPORT conscientious and valuable service of nine years They are however glad to be able to retain him on the Staff of the College as Professor of Moral Philosophy and to promote to the Chair of Classics Mr George Warr who has for the last six years most ably discharged the duties of Classical Lecturer The vacancy thus created has been filled up by the appointment of Mr Wilfred Gill Magdalen College Cambridge 6th in First Class of the Classical Tripos of 1879 In the Mathematical work of this Department which is united to that of the Applied Science Department the Council have to report the resignation of the Lecturers-of the Rev Cock after service of nearly forty years and of the Rev Howse They have thought it their duty to mark their sense of Mr Cock's long and conscientious labour by the grant of pension of £100 year To the posts thus vacated they have appointed Mr Richard Day of Emmanuel College Cambridge 17th Wrangler in 1868 and Mr James Sterndale Bennett of St John's College Cambridge 18th Wrangler in 1869 At the same time they have had pleasure in expressing their sense of the admirable work done for the College for the last seventeen years by the Rev Heywood by raising him from the rank of Lecturer to that of Assistant Professor The following honours have been obtained by students of this Department during the past year viz Oxford Bellewes Classical Scholarship Oriel College Stokoe Classical Exhibition Brasenose College Cambridge Farrar Classical Scholarship Magdalen College Hayward Mathematical Exhibition Magdalen College Hart Whewell International Law Scholarship -In the Department of Applied Sciences the Council again have to report falling off of numbers from 78 to
