54 annual report Comparing this with the list of 1880 it will be seen that the number of Matriculated Students has increased in the Theological and Medical Departments and diminished in the other Departments-being on the whole in advance of 1879 29 in advance of 1878 and 45 in advance of 1877 that the number of Occasional Students has slightly diminished from 475 to 457 and that the number of boys has increased by 56 and now stands higher than at any previous time The whole number under instruction is 43 in advance of the list of last year To these however are to be added the Special Classes held in the College viz Civil Service Classes 464 Gilbart Banking Lectures 454 Workshop Evening Class 32 Classes in Practical Art 31 Total 981 These classes increase rapidly the list is now 146 in advance of the list of last year and 336 in advance of the list of 1878 The Civil Service Class has made remarkable progress At its beginning in 1875 its work was confined to prepara- tion for Clerkships of Class and it contained 130 Students It now embraces Classes for all appointments-higher and lower- in the Home Civil Service and contains 464 Students The School of Practical Art is new Department only just beginning its work and likely in all probability to expand considerably before long Α The Theological Department has again continued the steady advance of the last few years and now stands at 74 of whom 58 belong to the Morning and 16 to the Evening Classes The two branches of the Department work very satisfactorily together and the Students passing in their third year from the Evening to the Morning Class still maintain the high character noticed in the last Report The
