ANNUAL REPORT 57 ships and Exhibitions for Students devoting themselves to scientific subjects in the Evening Classes In this new gift the Council gratefully recognise not only reward and encouragement to the Students themselves but proof of the interest felt by the Company in the important work of the Evening Classes -The School continues its efficiency and prosperity The number at this moment on the School Boll as actually in attendance is 575 besides boys on the Roll but absent through illness and other accidental causes making the total up to 587 as against 606 in 1878 In the opinion of the Head Master the slight diminution of numbers is due partly to The commercial depression so extensively felt through- out the country causing certain number of boys to be withdrawn and inducing the parents of others to seek cheaper place of education The unusual severity also of the weather during the past winter causing the temporary absence of larger number of boys than usual It is certainly not due to any falling oif in the efficiency or reputation of the School The Upper School in its Classical and Modern Departments is somewhat more numerous than in the last year the Middle School has slightly decreased while the Lower School remains much the same as before The character of the work done during the year is attested by tbe list of Honours and Distinctions herewith subjoined and by the Report of the Oxford and Cambridge Board of Examiners LIST OF HONOURS GAINED DURING THE YEAR 1877-78 -Oxford and Cambridge Ince Rev Canon Christ Church Oxford Appointed Regius Professor of Divinity Skeat Rev AV Christ's College Cambridge Appointed Professor of Anglo-Saxon
